Vice President, Clinical Research and Policy

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), is a not-for-profit membership organization that promotes the health of women and newborns. AWHONN’s mission is to empower and support nurses caring for women, newborns, and their families through research, education, and advocacy. The Vice President, Clinical Research and Policy (VP) provides strategic direction, leadership, and manages research, evidence-based practice, and public policy/government relations related activities. The VP also provides staff, members, and the public with research and information services to support the goals and mission of AWHONN.

Opportunity Highlights:

  • Serves as an advocate for nursing practice in national legislative and political forums.
  • Represents AWHONN at national meetings and through coalitions, task forces, federal hearings, Capitol Hill briefs and other external meetings.
  • Remains abreast of current issues and clinical findings within the areas of women’s health, obstetric and neonatal nursing.
  • Serves as the staff lead for the member-led Public Policy Committee and Research Advisory Panel.
  • Conceptualize and coordinate AWHONN research studies, oversee the research abstract review process.
  • Coordinate research science teams and the dissemination of research related information, including presentations at local and national conferences and the annual meeting.
  • Support constituents in meeting regional, local, and individual needs related to policy, research, and implementation of evidence-based care.
  • Evaluate pending legislation and survey the impact of legislation on the organization.
  • Write testimony and talking points for campaigns; develop the organization’s response to legislation.


  • PhD in clinical nursing research or related field.
  • At least 7 to 10 years of related professional/technical experience with a focus in the administration, development, and dissemination of a research program.
  • Experience in evidence-based practice and quality measurement and implementation a plus.
  • Experience in clinical research, policy development, and legislative influence.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and facilitate relationships and work successfully with other organizational units to achieve common objectives.
  • Strong listening, communication, and collaborative skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in project management and grant writing and execution.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in strategic thinking and tactical application of the organization’s finite resources.
