The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative nursing executive to proactively identify progressive approaches to deliver patient care, further enhancing patient satisfaction and the culture of nursing. UCSF is seeking a VP/CNO with a patient-first philosophy who can foster strong partnerships with the medical staff and bring an inclusive and collaborative approach to the Department of Nursing.

The VP/CNO serves as a member of the senior leadership team and provides strategic direction and executive-level leadership for adult patient-care services and nursing practice, with overall administrative, operational, and financial functions of these services throughout UCSF Health, which includes the Parnassus, Mission Bay, and Mount Zion campuses. The VP/CNO provides vision and direction for patient and quality of care initiatives and assures integration of services across nursing and patient-care services.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Collaborative leader and nursing executive with a comprehensive understanding of strategy, business planning, operations, and financial conditions.
  • Doctorate preferred; master’s/bachelor’s degree required, one of which must be in nursing.
  • Eight to 10 years of increasing responsibility in hospital leadership is required, preferably in an academic medical center.
  • Ability to work and lead in a unionized environment.
  • Influencer with change-management skills is needed to continue to raise performance levels and to continually transition adult nursing services from current state to future state in a highly matrixed and complex environment.
  • Experience with Lean management/continuous improvement.
  • Magnet experience or understands the principles of shared governance and interdisciplinary collaboration.
