Trading places.

Gaining a New Perspective

There is an old adage that nurses make the worst patients.

I recently had the experience of “trading places” by being a patient at a community hospital just south of Boston. With many decades as a nursing and hospital administrator under my belt, I can tell you that this was both a challenging and enlightening experience.

I received outstanding care from all caregivers, most notably the Nursing Staff. The nurses provided care to me that was responsive, professional, gentle, and competent. However, most impressive to me was that they never seemed rushed and were always looking out for my best interests.

As a former nursing administrator, this outstanding care begged the question for me, “Why is this team of nurses so overwhelmingly positive, supportive, and great at what they do?”

I learned that the nursing leadership team at this hospital is very stable and the staff feels supported in all that they do, even in the challenging current hospital environment.

What would happen?
It’s interesting to ponder what would happen if their nursing leadership team was not intact due to either chronic vacancies or sudden departures of key leaders. The stability they have worked so hard to establish would certainly be adversely impacted. A nursing leadership team with vacancies needs a solution and often cannot just continue to overstretch its existing leaders.
